  4. Welcome to the demonstration version of Apple Network Assistant!  
  5.  
  6. Apple Network Assistant is one of the three components of the Apple Network Administrator Toolkit, a software package that helps you manage a network of Mac OS-based computers. The other two components are At Ease for Workgroups 5.0 and Apple User and Group Manager 1.1.  (Demonstration versions of these products are not included.)

  8. With Apple Network Assistant, you can manage a network of Mac OS-based computers from a central workstation on your local network or over the Internet. You can also interact with users at the other workstations.

  10. The administrative features of Apple Network Assistant allow you to
  11.    •    generate reports about other workstations’ hardware and software
  12.    •    copy individual files or the entire hard disk from your workstation to other workstations
  13.    • delete individual files or the entire hard disk (except the System Folder) on other workstations
  14.    • test the network performance
  15.    •    open documents and open and quit applications on other workstations
  16.       • change TCP/IP and other system settings on other workstations
  17.    •    restart or shut down other workstations
  18.    • rebuild desktop databases.

  20. The interactive features of Apple Network Assistant allow you to
  21.    •    share the screen of any workstation with other workstations (Ethernet required to share a screen to multiple workstations.)
  22.    •    observe one or more screens on other workstations (Ethernet required to observe multiple workstations.)
  23.    •    control another workstation screen
  24.    •    receive attention requests from users who need your help
  25.    •    send text messages to users or text chat with a user
  26.    • talk with a user or make announcements to other workstations using the microphone connected to your workstation
  27.    • lock the screen of any workstation

  30. System Requirements

  32. Administrator workstation:
  33.         •    A Mac OS-based computer (except Macintosh Plus) with at least 8 MB of RAM
  34.         • A monitor with a resolution of at least 640 by 480
  35.         •    Macintosh system software version 7.1 or later
  36.         • Network connection (Ethernet is required for observing, sharing, and controlling screens, and for announce functions.)

  38. Client workstations:
  39.         •    A Mac OS-based computer (except Macintosh Plus) with at least 4 MB of RAM
  40.         •    Macintosh system software version 7.1 or later
  41.         • Network connection  (Ethernet is required for observing, sharing, and controlling screens, and for announce functions.)

  44. Installing the Apple Network Assistant Demo
  45.  
  46. This demonstration version allows you to set up a mini-network of one administrator workstation and two other workstations. The files needed to install the Apple Network Assistant Demo are located in the Network Assistant Demo folder. Follow these steps to perform the installation:

  48. 1. Copy the Network Assistant Startup Demo file to the Extensions folder in the System Folder of each workstation.

  50. 2. Copy the Network Assistant Demo application to the workstation that will be used to administer the other workstations.

  52. 3. Restart each workstation.

Once the workstations have restarted, double-click the Network Assistant Demo icon on the administrator workstation to open Network Assistant Demo. Add the other two workstations to your workstation list. You are now ready to begin managing these workstations using the commands in the Reports, Manage, and Interact menus.

  57. Be sure to read the Apple Software License Agreement before installing this demo. This is a demonstration version of Network Assistant.  It is intended for evaluation only - it is not intended for production purposes. Technical support is NOT available for this version.

  60. Limitations of the demo version
  61.

This demonstration version can be used to administer only 2 client workstations. With the full version of Apple Network Assistant, you can create as many as 20 different workstation lists with up to 250 workstations each, allowing you to administer up to 5,000 workstations from one workstation.

  64. The Open, Save, Print and Export commands have been disabled in this demonstration version.

  66. With the full version, you can set access privileges on each client workstation so that a password is required before the workstation can be remotely administered. You can also selectively disable any of the remote commands.
